On December 7, 2018 at 17:00 a large-scale exhibition project “Contemporaries of the 20th Century. Centenary of the Belarusian Portrait” will open at the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus. The exhibition presents the quintessential portraits of various Belarusian collections from a century perspective.
Over 100 paintings, drawings and sculptures from the collections of the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, Viciebsk Regional Museum of Local History, the funds of the National Center for Contemporary Arts, the Belarusian Union of Artists, as well as the private collection of Aliaksandr and Ina Radaeu, Andrej Pliasanau, as well as author's personal collections create a real guide of our country's history.
Chronological structure of the exhibition includes five sections – "Provincial Portrait", "In Search of the National. 1920s – 1930s Portrait", "Portrait of the Frontier Country"," New Heroes. Late 1950s – 1970s Portrait", "Time of Change. 1980s – 1990s Portrait", providing a panoramic view of the spirit of the time, reflecting the important historical events, tracing the evolution of stylistic interpretation of the portrait genre in the 20th century. The exhibition features the genre of diversity in its entirety: ceremonial and formal portraits, group and intimate ones, images of women and children, typical portraits and images of creative people, self-portraits and portrait sketches. The exhibition also gives a rare opportunity to see the same model through the eyes of different authors and to show the works before the wide audience for the first time.
A rich event program has been developed for the exhibition, including the curator's tour of the exhibition, lecture course, 15-minute "Stories about one of the portraits of the exhibition". The exhibition is also supplemented with texts and auditory content for individual visitors (explications for the sections, annotations to the portraits, sound accompaniment). Interactive content for individual visitors will be widely presented at the exhibition for the first time. Interactive brochure “Observe, think, create” in Russian, English and French, is the guide in the world of Belarusian portrait of the 20th century. People of different ages and professions from 10 countries participated in its development. Exhibition visitors will be able to choose not only the language of comments, but the angle/type of interaction with the objects of the thematic exposition.
