The exhibition “Belarusian still life of the 20th century” presents the paintings and art works from the collection of the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, painted by the artists throughout the last century. The museum funds contain more than 200 picturesque canvases and paintings of the 20th century, made by the Belarusian artists in the genre of still life (nature morte – literally – “dead nature”). The majority of them are the paintings created in the second half of the last century. The existence of such an apparent “disparity” is explained by revolutions, numerous devastating wars and social cataclysms which have befallen onto Belarus’s lot in the first decades of the 20th century. Many art works of this period were either destroyed or exported outside the country’s boundaries.
