“Enchanted by a Miracle. Graphic Art of Vasily Zvontsov. From the collections of the State Memorial Historical-Literary and Natural-Landscape Museum-Reserve of Alexander Pushkin Mikhailovskoye and the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus

The exhibition dedicated to the work of the remarkable Leningrad graphic artist, recognized master of etching, Honoured (1978) and People's Artist of the RSFSR (1983) Vasily Zvontsov (1917-1994), aims to show the inseparable creative and personal connection of the artist with the Pushkin sites of the Pskov land. On July 6, 1965, he made this entry in the Book of Honored Visitors of the Pushkin Reserve: “If it is true that a person can have a second Motherland, then this is Mikhailovskoye, to which I with admiration dedicate the second half of my life”.

“Enchanted by a miracle” – this definition was given to the artist by the poet Mikhail Dudin. The exhibition implements the joint project of the State Memorial Historical-Literary and Natural-Landscape Museum-Reserve of Alexander Pushkin Mikhailovskoye and the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus. The bulk of the exhibits (about 90) are the works of Vasily Zvontsov from the collection of the Pushkin Museum-Reserve, with which the artist has been bound by more than 30 years of friendship and cooperation. The results of teaching at the Ilya Repin Institute (St. Petersburg) are represented by his textbooks and works of his students, recognized masters of graphics at the present – Vladimir Alexeev, Yekaterina Zvontsova and Korinna Pretro.

Thanks to the personal friendship of Vasily Zvontsov with the legendary director of the Pushkin State Reserve Semyon Geychenko, the collection of the museum has the works of art created on this land and mostly received as a gift. They formed the iconographic base of landscapes of Pushkin's places of the second half of the 20th century. To date, there are about 300 units in the collection of Vasily Zvontsov’s works in the Pushkin Museum-Reserve. The exhibition features works in all the techniques the artist mastered: pencil, charcoal, China ink, watercolor, etching and Chinese ink – organized in the thematic and chronological order.

It reflects his participation in the artistic project and design of the expositions and objects of the Pushkin Reserve: the House of the Estate Manager in Mikhailovskoye and the Saint (Pyatnitskiye) Gate in the Svyatogorsky Monastery Museum, etc. Zvontsov is presented as the author of the illustrations for the first edition of the book “Alexander. Poems written in Mikhailovskoye” (1967, compiled by Semyon Geychenko), 5 editions of the book by Geychenko “By the Lukomorye”. Illustrated by Vasily Zvontsov, large-scale prints were issued with postcards, albums, memos and guides to the Pushkin Reserve. In 1983 Semyon Geychenko wrote about his friend: “The name of the Leningrad graphic artist Vasily Zvontsov is forever inscribed in the history of the Pushkin Museum-Reserve, since many of his engravings and etchings have become symbols of the Pushkin spirit itself ...”. The exposition is complemented by the artist's works from the collection of the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus.
