“Equos. Koń. Horse” exhibition
15.06 - 26.08.2018

During the summer months, “Equos. Koń. Horse” exhibition organized jointly by the Museum of Southern Podlasie and the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in the Republic of Belarus and the Polish Institute in Minsk will be displayed at the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus.

Since ancient times, horses have not only been man's faithful companions in real life, but also one of the most popular subjects of literature and art. Epics, songs, fairy tales, proverbs, riddles, sayings, created by folk wisdom over the centuries, praise this “faithful, patient comrade” (Alexander Pushkin). Modern writers and poets glorify it in prose and compose poems about it. The horse has always been one of the most “claimed” images in art from the Upper Paleolithic cave paintings to our days. Artists are attracted by its graceful form, intelligence and loyalty, speed, courage and endurance.

The role of the horse is well-known in the history of civilization. Thanks to the domestication of the horse, people could settle on vast territories, make active use of wheeled transport, horses were part of the conquests, indispensable helpers in the agriculture, became the “engine of trade”... It is not surprising that its image, which occupied an important place in the mythological ideas and fine arts of many ancient peoples, remains of interest for artists by this day.

The exhibition presents works of European artists of the 17th–21st centuries, which allows to demonstrate how masters of different periods and artistic schools, styles and trends interpreted the image of a horse in various genres of art. For a long time, horse was an important character in ceremonial portraits, in battle and genre paintings, and from the 18th century – as a self-sufficient model – in works of animalists. Thus formed a special and specific artistic phenomenon — horse or hippical (from the Greek hippos – horse) genre.

The exposition consists of several thematic sections, which contain pieces of art united by similar subjects. This allows to demonstrate the sustained interest of artists to certain themes and motifs associated with

horses, and at the same time gives the opportunity to appreciate different artistic solutions proposed by the artists of different styles and generations.

The exhibition will present over 200 works from the collections of the Museum of Southern Podlasie (Biała Podlaska, Poland) and the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus.

The exhibition will be on display until August 26, 2018.
