European Art of the 16th – 20th centuries

The collection of the West-European Art in the National Art Museum of the Republic Belarus is relatively small. Beginning of the collection activity of the museum in this direction refers to the end of 1940s. Particularly intensively fund of the European art was renewed in 1960-1970-s. In 1961 it was bought 10 picturesque works, from the collection of well-known Minsk collector, former director of the Belarusian institute of stock-breeding, Mikhail Gabyshev, which formed the basis of the collection of the Italian painting. Then from the fund the State Museum of Graphic Arts named after Alexander Pushkin were sent to the museum canvases by C.J. Vernet, F. Vauverman, F. Musheron, H. Robert, Ya. Reysdale and others. Expansion and enrichment of the fund of the division of the West-European Art was promoted by the active contacts with collectors of Moscow and Leningrad. So, such works of art as "Mountain Landscape " of the Swiss artist A. Kalam, genre scene "After Hunt "of the Swedish artist B. Nordenberg, large canvas on biblical plot "Susanna and Old Man " of the French artist J. F. de Trua and others were obtained from private collections in 1965.

The art of Italy of the 16th -19th centuries is introduced in the exposition of the museum by portraits, pictures on mythological and biblical plots of such artists as Antonio Dzanki, "Denouncement of Odyssey", Girolamo Troppa "Mythological Plot", Juzeppe Kazanova "Landscape with an Oxen" and others.

The Section of Dutch painting of the 17th c. allows to judge about the best achievements of realistic Art in Holland by Thomas Heremans "Summer", "Winter", Phillips Vauverman "Preparations for Hunt", Jacob Gillig "Fish", Frederick de Musheron "Landscape with Wayfarers and Animals".

The presentation of the Flemish painting gives splendid canvas "Venus in a Smithy of the Volcano", by Peter Tiz - pupil of Rubens and Van-Dyck, landscape Yan Frans Blumen "Landscape with Goats", "Landscape with Figures".

Pride of the French collection of Art of the 17-19th centuries are landscapes by Huber Robert "Landscape with Obelisk and Ruins of the Aqueduct", "Garden of the Borgeze Villa in Rome", Claude- Josef Vernet "Seaside Landscape", portraits by Francois Gerard "Portrait of Yu. Tatischeva", Jean Batiste Renee "Portrait of the Prince A. Kurakina", Aleksis Grimmu "Man in a Beret", compositions on mythological and religious plots "Susanna and Old Man" by Francois de Trua, "Venus and Mars" by Francois Gilioma Menazho (?).

Several picturesque canvases are presented by such European countries as England of George Morland ("Return from the Hunt", Thomas Barker "Battle Scene"), Germany (Anna Lishevska "Portrait of M. Oginsky"), Danmark (Christian Yensen "Feminine Portrait"), Belgium (David Noter "Still Life with a Lobster", "Still Life with a Crab"), Austria (Venkeslaus Peter "Birds"), Switzerland (Alexander Kalam "Mountain Landscape"), Poland (Yuzef Rapatsky "Landscape with a Mill").

Sculpture in the museum's collection is presented by works of master artists of French, Italian, Polish artistic schools of the 18-20th centuries.

Works of Enriko Brag ("Portrait of Sarah Bernar"), Antonio Tarsia ("Ionone"), Juzeppe del Nero ("Mercury- killer of Argus") presents creative activity of the Italian sculptors of the 18- 19th centuries.

The section of the French sculpture of the second half 19th - early 20th centuries comprises of itself sculptural compositions of Pierre Jul Main ("Dogs, attacking a Wild Boar", "Flemish Cow with a Calf"), is Jan-Batiste Carpau (bust of " Dance Genius "). Works of Antonin Laru ("Straw Dryer"), Francois-Raul Larsh ("Janna d'Аrque") are examples of the serial sculpture of the 19th century. The foundry workshops of F.Barbedienne, Susse Freres, Siot-Decauville, Thiebaut Freres and etc. compete on the artistic market in this period .

Collection West-European graphics of the 18- 19th centuries is presented by engravings and drawings of masters of French (Pierre-Francois Bazan, Nikola-Gabriel Dyupyui, Jan Godfrua and others), Italian (Jovanni-Batist Piranezi, Jovanni Ottaviani, Domeniko Montagyu), English (Luc Sallivan), German (Cristian-Wilgelm-Earnst Ditrih, Georg-Fridrih Shmidt, Iogann-Georg Villa and others), polish artistic schools. Engravings of Susanna Baumann, Cristina Dyubua, Hans Sherer, Frans Eggenshviler (Switzerland), Johannes Brauera, Lea Grundig, Cristof Nis, Oliver Kossak (Germany) presents particularities of the graphics of the second half of the 20th century.

Collection of West-European decorative-applied art presents works of the porcelain manufacturings of the late 18- early 19th cc. Products of one of the oldest- Maysen (1710) - remind of chinese samples. Vases with прорезными boards, cups and saucers of the whimsical fluted form is painted by cobalt, their surfaces are decorated with scenes of the birds and flowers. Except for containers and varied dishes Maysen produced porcelain figures as well. Particularly often, the Maysen sculptors addressed to mythological and allegorical plots. Berlin Royal porcelain manufacturing starts its history from the second half of the 18th century. The museum exhibits give presentation about subject, executed in the early 19th century. Classicism dominates in art of this time, standard of the products for artist become works of antiquity. Master artists are actively plagerized forms of the antique ceramics. In 1830-s special popularity in Europe gains the so named "Jersey джерсийская майолика" with typical painting of golden люстром on blue, light-ochre or rose backgrounds. майолика was made in England, in large industrial and port city Sanderlend, but was on sale on Jersey island , thence has come its name. The museum disposes the works of the factories of Chechs and Austria of the late 18- 20th centuries. In its funds is kept single interesting samples of furniture of the European manufacturings. This is a closet of the work Gdansk masters of the 17th century, Dutch composed furniture of the same century, cabinet of the work of South Germany master of the late 17- early 18th century. At present the collection of the West-European decorative-applied art of the National Art Museum of the Republic Belarus has nearly 250 units of keeping.
