Research department of foreign art legally exists in the museum since June, 1990. Exactly at that time, according to order # 35 of 1.06.1990 sector of foreign art was organized, which has got the status of the department in May 1991. Main trends of the department 's activity: scientific study of the collections of West-European painting, sculpture, graphic art; shaping of the collection, preparation and creation of exhibitions; organization and holding of exhibitions.
Senior scientific employee Nina Baranovskaya (1914-1989) was practically concerned with the scientific study of the collections of the fund of foreign art in the museum from 1976 till 1989. She created first scientific file-cabinets of the collections, results of the study of works were introduced into scientific turnover through various types of publications - articles, exhibition expositions. In 2000 collection of the monuments of Oriental culture and art was joined to the fund of West-European art. It presents traditional types of art of the countries of Front, Middle, Central, South and South-East Asia, Caucasus and Far East: painting and sculpture, miniature and art of the public picture, weaving and artistic metal, ceramics and porcelain, painted and cloisonnéenamel, wood-carving, carving on bones, stone, painted and carved laquers. Then the department was renamed to the department of West-European art and art of the countries of Orient. Аnd since 2002, it has got the name - research department of foreign art.
Employees of the department make lectures, conduct excursions during exhibitions of the museum. Today five scientific employees work in the department, each of them leads scientific work on study and catalogings of the collections, on propaganda of the works of the museum collection, on organizations and holding of exhibitions.
Elena Senikevich - Head of the department. She is concerned with the study of the art collection of the Oriental countries .
Tamara Karandasheva - leading scientific employee (since 1990 to 2003 - Head of the department). She is concerned with the study of West-European painting collection.
Svetlana Prokopieva - leading scientific employee. She is concerned with the study of West-European graphic art and sculpture.
Natalia Schukina - scientific employee. She is concerned with the study of the art collection of the Oriental countries.
Alla Galeta- scientific employee. She is concerned with the study of painting collection .
