department of modern Belarusian art
Department of modern Belarusian art was created in 1957. From this time the main trends of its activity become research, stock and scientific and educational work.
Employees of the department are concerned with study of history of development of the domestic art from the end of the 19th century till present day. Results of this perennial scientific work are published in mass media, catalogues of exhibitions, catalogues of the museum funds, albums, collections of the scientific works of the museum.

Employees of the department take active part in completing of the funds of painting, graphics, sculpture.They regularly select works for exhibitions and in workshops of artists for the aquisition in the collection of the museum.
For the years of existence of the department great work was made on creation and periodic renovation of constant exhibitions the Belarusian art in the museum and its branches. Hundreds of the exhibitions from the funds of the museum and from private collections of the domestic artists were prepared and exhibited in the museum, branches, in other exhibition premises all over Belarus, as well as overseas.
Much attention in the department is paid to the scientific and methodical as well as educational activity. Employees of the department render methodical assistance to Belarusian, as well as foreign colleagues from other museums. They give advise on questions, which are connected with history of the Belarusian art and with problems of its modern development to scientists, artists, students and post-graduate students, and in general all, who is interested in the Belarusian art. Lectures and excursions, which offer employees of the department to the amateurs of fine arts, give to the last possibility to brightly visualize the main trends and particularities of the development of domestic art on length of the 20th century .
At different time the department was headed by G. Borovik (1957-1964), P. Gerasimovich (1964-1981), O. Kovalenko (1981-2004). E. Veter, E. Peterson, S. Kitanina, A. Narkevich, V. Churkina, N. Kalashnik, V. Buivol, K. Barabanov, T. Surskaya, A.D. Smirnova, A.Yu. Smirnova and others worked in the department.
